Day Trips from Barcelona: Best Places to Visit
Barcelona is an excellent base for exploring Catalonia beyond the city. In one well-planned day, you can trade Gaudí and busy boulevards for a mountain monastery, a medieval old town, a Mediterranean beach or Roman ruins.

A good day trip from Barcelona is not simply a destination that looks attractive on a map. It should leave enough time to experience the place without turning the day into a race between stations, connections and attractions.
This shortlist focuses on realistic choices: Montserrat, Girona, Sitges, Tarragona, Figueres and selected Costa Brava areas. They are not interchangeable. Each gives you a different kind of day.
If you are still planning your time inside the city, start with the Ultimate Barcelona Travel Guide and Things to Do in Barcelona.

The shortlist
Best Day Trips from Barcelona
Choose one main destination and give it enough time. The point of a day trip is to experience somewhere else, not simply collect place names.

Montserrat
Montserrat is the strongest choice for a complete change of scenery. The mountain, monastery and walking routes can comfortably fill a full day.
Departure: Barcelona-Plaça Espanya via FGC.
Allow: roughly 1h 15m–1h 30m to reach the monastery area, including the mountain connection.
Keep in mind: cloud and fog can change the experience dramatically. Check conditions before leaving.

Girona
Girona works beautifully as a city day. Its historic centre is compact enough to explore largely on foot, with plenty of time for lunch and a slower afternoon.
Departure: Barcelona-Sants is the key station for fast services.
Allow: around 40 minutes on high-speed trains; slower services take longer.
Best rhythm: arrive early, explore the old quarter, then leave room for lunch and an unhurried walk.

Sitges
Sitges is one of the easiest ways to make Barcelona feel far away without spending much of the day travelling. The old town, seafront and beaches work naturally together.
Departure: Sants, Passeig de Gràcia or Estació de França, depending on the service.
Allow: roughly 35–45 minutes.
Best use: choose Sitges when you want the day to feel like a break rather than another sightseeing mission.

Tarragona
Tarragona combines Roman heritage with the Mediterranean. It is a natural alternative to Girona if ancient history matters more to you than medieval architecture.
Departure: Barcelona stations vary by service; check the exact train before leaving.
Allow: roughly 1–1½ hours by regional services, depending on the train.
Good focus: Roman remains, old-town streets and the sea rather than trying to cover every sight.

Figueres
Figueres makes sense when the Dalí Theatre-Museum is the reason for going. The destination has a clear purpose, which helps keep a longer travel day under control.
Departure: Barcelona-Sants is the main station to check for fast northbound services.
Allow: roughly an hour on the fastest trains; other services take longer.
Book ahead: if the Dalí museum is central to your day, reserve your admission before travelling.

Costa Brava
Costa Brava is not one destination. For a successful day, choose one coastal base or one clear route rather than trying to see several towns.
Examples: Tossa de Mar, Cadaqués or Lloret de Mar can create very different days.
Travel: journey time depends heavily on the town and whether you use train, bus or car.
Rule: pick one main coastal area. The further north or east you go, the more important the return journey becomes.

Before you leave
Know Your Departure Station
“From Barcelona” does not mean every day trip starts at the same station. Check the origin on the service you choose before leaving your accommodation.
Montserrat
Plaça Espanya is the key starting point for the FGC route toward Montserrat. The journey then continues toward the mountain by rack railway or another mountain connection.
Girona & Figueres
Barcelona-Sants is the main station to check for fast northbound services. Your exact departure can vary by train.
Sitges & Tarragona
Coastal and regional services can use Sants, Passeig de Gràcia or Estació de França, depending on the route and train.

What Can You Combine in One Day?
Some combinations work for travellers who accept a faster pace. Others simply create too much transport for one day.
Girona + Figueres
This can work with fast trains and a focused plan. Give Girona a compact old-town visit and make the Dalí museum the main purpose of the Figueres stop.
Montserrat + Sitges
They pull the day in different directions and require different travel rhythms. Combining them leaves less time to enjoy either place.
Figueres + Costa Brava
Figueres already has a clear museum-focused purpose. Adding a coastal town turns the day into a race, especially when return connections matter.
Simple planning rules
Make the Day Feel Like a Trip, Not a Transfer
Check the departure station
Barcelona has several major rail stations. Do not assume the nearest one is the correct one.
Start early
The first part of the day is valuable on longer trips, especially Montserrat and Figueres.
Book the key attraction
If a museum or timed experience is the reason for the trip, secure the admission before you travel.
Leave room for lunch
A day trip feels better when lunch is part of the experience instead of something squeezed between trains.
Check the return
For longer journeys, look at the last practical return before committing to an ambitious itinerary.
Watch the weather
Mountain destinations and coastal days can feel completely different when conditions change.
The Spanaly approach
One good destination is better than five rushed stops.
Montserrat, Girona, Sitges, Tarragona, Figueres and selected Costa Brava areas all make sense from Barcelona — but for different reasons. Choose the experience you want, check the journey, and give the destination enough time to feel like somewhere you actually visited.
